The winners of the 2017 5th grade Vandenberg Essay Contest were announced at an assembly at the Charlevoix Elementary school on Wednesday, May 24th. Pictured are (left to right) McKenzie Cark who wrote about Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Amelia Drenth who wrote about the Rainbow Shoppe, Adam Streeter who’s Grand Prize winning essay was about the Charlevoix Community Food Pantry, Angeline Wyncoop who wrote about Child and Family Services, Jasmine Brooks writing about the Charlevoix County Humane Society, and Laina Sladies who’s essay was about the Rainbow Shoppe. Fifth Grad students research the various charities and then write their essays. A committee from the Kiwanis Club of Charlevoix judges the essays and invites a representative from the charity to the special assembly to accept a check from the student who wrote about their organization. The checks are from funds donated by sponsors of the contest. The grand prize winning essay receives a check for two hundred dollars the others receive one hundred dollar checks. The student winners also read their essays at the May 30th Charlevoix Kiwanis Club meeting.
