Chet Janik Charlevoix Superintend of Schools, Tonya Mann and Travis Garrett, Charlevoix Middle-School Principal spoke on a variety to topics from bullying to school finances.

Jeremy McBain editor of the Petoskey News Review and Steve Zuker Editor of the Charlevoix Courier spoke about changes at both papers. They also addressed the difficulties in the news business in general and the challenges of the digital age. (Program Chairman Ken Kline center)

Joesph Schodde Vice President of Financial Services, Charlevoix Area Hospital informed the Club about the implementation of the new data system at the Hospital. All records at the hospital have been digitized. The system purchased was the same that is in use at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey and Munson in Traverse City.

Lorie Selissen of Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency and Tara Riley told about their efforts to find homes for the homeless in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.

Winners of the 2012 Vandenburg Essay Contest

Kaitlin Schwenke, Devin Sutton, Emily Graham, Prestyn Seese, Ana Smith, Jenna Good.

Kaitlin was the grand prize winner writing her essay about Bethany Christian Services. There wasn’t a dry eye in the audience after she read her moving essay and then handed her $100.00 award to the social worker who helped place her into the loving Schwenke family.

The other students in the photo also did an excellent job writing their essays about the Red Cross, Manna Food Project, Third Level, Women’s Resource Center and the Charlevoix Area Humane Society. Representatives from all the agencies were on hand to receive their $50.00 award.

Huntington bank rewarded the students by donating $150.00 to the essay contest which in turn the essay committee purchased Chamber Checks for each student. All in all a very successful Kiwanis event.

Fund Raising

The Spring Flower Sales Event had a great 1^styear! However, we continue to get more requests for funds than we have funds to support. Charlevoix Kiwanis would benefit from a new, fresh, BIG fundraiser! Get together with some fellow Kiwanians and come up with some ideas! If anyone is interested in doing a 5k run fundraiser it is something we have done in the past and would be easy to try again. -Leah

Oleson Slips

Newer members may not know about this fund raiser and long-time members should be reminded about one of the easier fund raisers that the Club has. We return these sales receipts to Olesons and they give us money. The store also gives us great assistance in getting the best possible value for our purchase of product for our kielbasa sales. So if you shop at Olesons save those receipts. Rebecca Parker is chairperson for this stealth fund raiser.

Vandenberg Essay Contest

The 4th Annual Vandenberg Essay Contest is now in process. The committee members have been working diligently acquiring sponsors, printing programs and speaking with fifth graders about non-profits. This essay contest was named after long time Kiwanis member, former president and Lt.Governor of our club who also was a former math/science teacher in the Grand Rapids schools and retired to substitute at Charlevoix Middle School. Students are asked to write an essay about a non-profit that they would like to donate money to. Winning essay writers will receive a check that they in turn will give to the non-profit they wrote about.

This years program will take place in the large group room at Charlevoix Middle School, 10:30 AM on Tuesday, May, 8. We are hopeful Kiwanis members will attend and then make it on time to our regularly scheduled meeting at the Weathervane.

AKtion Club Bowl-A-Ton

The Northern Zone Aktion Clubs Held a Bowl-A-Ton March 19th at the Northern Light Recreation complex. This bowling event was an International Aktion Club fund raiser. Raising money for Bed Kits for children in 3rd world countries, known as Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW). This is a Michigan District function in its 5th year. The event was held in Harbor Springs. There were three Aktion Clubs present with about 40 members, Charlevoix-Bergmann Center, Straits Area Service and Gaylord Aktion Clubs. We also had three Kiwanis members attending from the Cheboygan Kiwanis Club and Aktion Club Advisers. We raised over $100, plus having lots of fun,meeting new friends and a pizza luncheon. The Southern part of the State Aktion Clubs bowled in Ann Arbor on the20th of March. In total, the Michigan District had about 200 member bowling raising slightly over $ 1000. We are growing and making a difference in the world.

Exceptional Riders

The Exceptional Riders Program, which is also a recipient of our Kiwanis funds will be hosting a Kentucky Derby party to be held at the Bay Harbor Equestrian Center on Saturday, May 5, from 4-7 PM. This fund raiser will help purchase a lift for safely placing wheel chair bound students onto a horse.

Members are invited to attend and donations in cash or items for the silent auction are welcomed. See Carolyn Navarre or Gayle Gennett for details. Thank you to the First Congregational Church for supplying folding chairs for this event.

Law Enforcement Career Academy Scholarship

Congratulations to Taggart McCreadie from Charlevoix High School. He is the Charlevoix Kiwanis Club recipient of the Law Enforcement Career Academy Scholarship. We will have him speak to our group when he returns from his week long, law enforcement training in Lansing, Michigan.

Builder’s Club Contest

The Charlevoix Middle School Builders club hosted a successful egg decorating contest and face painting . They collected $35.00 in donations the club voted to send the money to the Humane Society. This event was open to all fifth and sixth graders. Pictured here are decorators hard at work and the winners of the egg decorating contest.

AKtion Club Doll Makers

Thursday April 19, 2012 and 12:30 p.m. AKtion Club and Bergmann Center sewing group would like to get together to make some additional dolls for Young Children Priority One. We have needed help before and would love it if some ladies, or guys were willing to come by and help stuff and sew. We have quite a few started and just need to finish.

Please get back with me. The more hands the more we can make.
