Charlevoix Public Schools superintendent Mike Ritter spoke about the process that went into the decisions to reduce the number of facilities that the school system owns. The decision was precipitated by continued decreasing enrollment in the Charlevoix school system. Voters will be voting in November on a proposal that would close the current elementary school and update the old high school. The process would involve demolition of parts of the building and the construction of a more suitable structure for the system’s current and future needs. Some of the considerations for the move were the more centralized location, use of the existing gym and the proximity to the athletic field. Ritter recognized that the traffic on US-31/Bridge Street is a problem that will have to be addressed.
