Kiwanis Club of Charlevoix Michigan

Serving the community of Charlevoix and its children for over 80 years

WELCOME

The Charlevoix Kiwanis Club has been serving the community and its children for more than eighty years. The Club was chartered on March 19th, 1935 at the Masonic Temple in Charlevoix. It was the first service club to be organized in Charlevoix.

In 1939 the Club sponsored the formation of Boy Scout Troop #11. The Club has continued supporting the troop which is the second oldest in Northern Michigan. The Club is proud to be one of the first Clubs in Michigan to sponsor an AKtion Club.

The club currently has forty-seven members. It was the first service club in Charlevoix. and meets each Tuesday at noon in the lower level of the Weathervane Resturant in Charlevoix. The Club is also proud to be one of the first Clubs in Michigan to sponsor an AKtion Club.

What could be more important than stimulating young minds?

The Kiwanis Club of Charlevoix supports Head Start's efforts to provide an environment that focuses on nurturing and caring for children. We believe we can help by providing role models that may not be otherwise available to local children for a variety of circumstances.

YOUNG CHILDREN PRIORITY ONE

Each week, during the school year, club members along with few other members of the community, spend a short time reading  to the head start children participating in this valuable program. The Kiwanis Club of Charlevoix supports Head Start's efforts to provide an environment that focuses on nurturing and caring for children. We believe we can help by providing role models that may not be otherwise available to local children for a variety of circumstances.

We also provide books. We believe there is nothing more important than providing an interest in books and reading to children at an early age. If you share our view, why not join us?

AKtion Club

Aktion Clubs are for adults with disabilities. The Kiwanis Club of Charlevoix sponsored the second Aktion club in Michigan in conjunction with the Charlevoix Bergmann Center.
It is very rewarding to see AKtion club members gain confidence, increase their communication skills and become active members of their community.

The Aktion Club Moto: Where development has no disability.

There are 12, 000 Aktion Club members in 500 clubs around the world. They donate 92,000 hours of service every year. It is the fastest growing  Kiwanis service leadership programs.

BUILDER'S CLUB

This year the St. Mary’s School’s Kiwanis Builder’s Club raised and donated OVER $1000 in less than 9 months to Charlevoix Community non-profit organizations. They have collected food for the Charlevoix Community Food Pantry, clothes for Kari’s Closet and the Rainbow Shop, and they are a great leadership group at St. Mary’s School.

Joe Solomon is the Club’s advisor, St. Mary’s teacher and photographer. Sue Goss is the Club’s Kiwanis advisor.

Builder’s Clubs are student-led community service organizations that operate under school regulations and draw its members from the student body.

Builder’s Club is the largest service organization for middle school and junior high students, with more than 45,000 members worldwide.

Members learn to work together and develop servant-leaders skills as they serve their school and community.

Your Future is created by what you do today not tomorrow

THE THINGS WE DO

The Charlevoix Kiwanis Club sponsors with funds and/or volunteer hours over two dozen organizations. In fact, the club averages nearly 150 volunteer hours per month. (This does not include time spent in fundraising projects) For more than 70 years, the Club has sponsored Boy Scout Troup #11. The Troop has 30 Eagle Scout awards. Cub Scouts and Sea Scouts are also sponsored. The Sea Scouts use and maintain the club’s own 30 foot sailboat.

Sea Scouts – Ship 11

Not many Kiwanis clubs are fortunate to have the kind of access to recreational boating opportunities as the Kiwanis Club of Charlevoix. Even fewer own a 30-foot sailboat maintained and operated by the Club’s Sea Scouts. The club as supported scouting programs almost from its inception. The Sea Scout program is a newer program and…
